Swimming for a longer and better life

A new study shows that swimming reduces the risk of death in men by about 50% compared to runners, walkers, and their seated peers. The study by Dr. Steven Blair at the University of South Carolina included a comprehensive physical and behavioral survey of more than 40,000 men aged 20-90 who had participated in the Aerobics Center (ACLS) longitudinal study over the past 32 years. "We also saw lower mortality in swimmers than in runners," explains Blair. "Therefore, swimming appears to be a healthy alternative to other types of physical activity. ... In previous studies in the same population, we found that both men and women had similar benefits of swimming in terms of fitness and other health indicators." The results were presented at the 2008 World Aquatic Health ™ Conference in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and were published in the International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education.
